FRITZ KRAMPE ============ 1913 Born, 19th December, 1913 in Berlin. Attended the "Schiller-Gymnasium" and studied at the Academy of Art under Professor Ferdinand Spiegel. Interested in animals, especially in wild life. 1932 Worked on a cargo boat in his holiday and visited Siberia. On the voyage made studies of whales and dolphins. His illustrations for Peer Gynt date from this period. 1933 Lived and worked for a year in pro-Hitler Munich, but could not identify with the prevailing spirit. 1934 Back in Berlin he completed a year's military service. Made murals in the mess hall. 1935 Accepted for Master study by the Prussian Academy of Art. 1939 Called up for military service in Poland and France. After a short study leave he volunteered for the Africa Corp. 1941 Taken prisoner of war before Tobruk and sent to the prison camp, Dhurringile, Victoria, Australia, where he remained until 1947. There he painted water-colour landscapes. 1947 Returned to Berlin where chaotic circumstances prevailed. It was difficult for him to re-adjust, but he obtained commissions for illustrating books on animal life. 1951 Served in Windhoek, South West Africa, where he applied himself primarily to the study of wild animals. Made many journeys, also throughout Africa. 1966 Travelled through the Middle-East and Pakistan to Bombay, India. Shortly thereafter, on 28th July, was killed by an elephant while on safari near the mouth of the Ootaca.
